O Magnum Mysterium (de Victoria) – (2013) for Brass Quartet (2 Tpt., 2 Trb.), Grade 3, 3’45”
In the winter of 2013 I arranged Tomas Luis de Victoria’s setting of “O Magnum Mysterium” for two trumpets and two trombones. Victoria was a Renaissance composer (a student of Palestrina) and Catholic priest from Spain. The text describes the awe and mystery of the birth of Christ. Victoria sets it wonderfully in the late-Renaissance polyphonic style. You can find a wonderful recording of the original here. This wonderful work has quiet, reverent moments contrasted with expressions of pure joy in the dance-like Alleluia section. It was great fun to arrange and perform, as well (especially around Christmas)! I am also working on a version for brass quintet, so look for that to come in the future! Purchase here!
